Coming across mouse, ants or palmetto bugs in shower is a distressing experience. You've got to find a way to get rid of them so you can get rid of the stress that they bring. Here are some cheap pest control ideas that you may find really helpful.

pest control
1. Mouse traps- Mouse traps can be purchased at relatively cheap price. It can be found in hardware shops. Instead of putting the traditional cheese on the picture, you can make use of raw bacon and peanut butter that make a good bait.

2. Shallow pans- For snails and slugs, you can make use of shallow pans or container jar lids with beer. You can place them in open areas in your garden. Change the beer every three days. Wash any slime off your hands with warm water and vinegar.

3. Peppermint tea- You can repel the mice with the scent of the peppermint tea. You have to boil two cups of water, turn off the heat and then add at least four to six tea bags of peppermint. Let the tea steep for six to eight hours and then stir in two teaspoons of dish-washing liquid. Fill a spray bottle with the tea and coat areas where you think the mice are entering.

Baking Soda For Pest Control
4. Baking soda- Ingesting baking soda will kill the palmetto bugs. You have to make it palatable so it will be more effective. Bait the unwanted guests by mixing the baking soda with equal parts of icing sugar and sprinkle the mixture inside the cabinets and other potential areas where the palmetto bugs lie.

5. Sugar- If you notice many ants, you can bait them by giving what they want and that of course, is sugar. You can make a trap by adding 23 teaspoon sugar into one cup of water. Systematic Approach to End Your Problem with Palmetto Bugs

Everybody hates palmetto bugs. It is one of the most prominent pests in the United States with a great number of households that have problems with annoying palmetto bugs. Palmetto bug is another term for cockroach. Aside from the stress that they give, they can also contaminate our food supply. With the diseases and bacteria that they carry, it is very important that we are educated about an organized approach to get rid of them.
palmetto bugs
In order to effectively get rid of this insect in your homes, you have to eliminate certain resources and choose the best methods to kill them. Make sure that your approach is systematic. You may follow these steps to free your homes from the infestation of palmetto bugs.

1. Prevent the further entry of palmetto bugs in your home by sealing off electrical and plumbing connections well especially if you are living in a multi-unit housing. Take note that pests can gain entry access from another person’s home. You have to caulk or seal off any crack or gap that is present in any of your doors and windows. You also have to cover the vent pipes on your roof with the use of a fiberglass net to block any pest access.

2. Eliminate the things that palmetto bugs need to survive. They need food, water and shelter in order to survive so make sure that you take these things away from them. If you are going to take away the availability of these resources, you will cease to be a hospitable host for these pests. Clean up grease immediately including crumbs and beverage spills. You also have to empty trash baskets frequently and clean counter-tops, floors and areas for food storage.

Silica gel for pest control
3. Choose a treatment that is less toxic than the others. This will ensure that your health and the environment remain safe. You can make use of sprays, baits and traps.

4. Implement the best treatment method. After deciding on the treatment method that is ideal for your health and for the environment, the next thing must be the action. You may also consider boric acids or silica gels in the areas where palmetto bugs usually travel. It may be under the sink and stoves, behind the refrigerators, cabinets or electric outlets.

5. Place traps near garbage cans at night. This can help you monitor the pest activity.

How to Resolve Your Termite Problem?

Wait. Do not sell your house just yet! People are terrified of termites and everyone has a justified reason why. I for one am not a fan of any creepy crawlers, especially the ones who could eat my family out-of-house-and-home, invade library to destroy my vast collection of books, nor the concept of having to tear down our age-old tree house I had since I was small. Termites are pests that need immediate resolution.

Here are some things-to-do when termites are found in your area:

1. Buy a termite trap from your local hardware or DIY home-improvement stores.

Preventive action is better than cure. If you hear from a neighbor that someone in the area is experiencing problems on pest, termites to be specific. Take control by thinking ahead. There are ways to save your property from permanent structural damage. Setting up termite traps around your home, in your yard and on neighboring cluster of trees can save you a huge amount of money. These termite traps are commonly made of wooden-stakes which can be driven to the ground or dangled as bait for wandering termites. Just check regularly to detect any pests in your area. No safety hazard for kids or pets, these are environment-friendly non-chemical termite traps designed for every home.

2. Use liquid termiticide spray to prevent further infestation.

Spraying liquid termiticide on the base of the infected tree and other neighboring trees will help control the termite problem. Make sure to spray an approximate 3-foot radius around the base of the tree. Continue spraying till you reach at least 2-feet high. Doing so will prevent more termites from returning to their nests. Spray on the exterior of wooden structures nearby like sheds, boats, panels etc. For a more environment-kid friendly approach, I would recommend the use of biodegradable permethrin-based insecticide, such as Torpedo or Dragnet. Another alternative could be bought a commercial hydrocarbon-based termiticide from your hardware store.

3. Pruning infected wood once discovered in a tree.

Immediately remove infected area. Narrow tunnels through the wood, large nesting chambers, tiny white eggs or visible crawling termites on the tree trunk, are just some indicators of a pest problem. Pruning will help the tree from being fully infested. Do this, as soon as signs of termites are discovered. Burn or destroy the wood as soon as possible to prevent the termites from transferring to another wooden home.

4. Follow-up Treatment

Check daily if the creepy crawling-structure-destroyers have tried to return to the trees. Monitor the termite situation daily. Continue anti-termite spraying until you are confident that the situation has been completely controlled. Do not be complacent. Remove uninfected wood from moist areas or remove from exposure to rain if possible. Eliminate rotting stumps from your yard and do away with old wooden piles from your workshop. Get rid of anything that might potentially become a home for the termite pests.

Governments Move to Save the Bees

June this year, governments launched an urgent and comprehensive study of the bee population decline.
Bees, not only help beautiful flowers grow, mainly they spearhead the pollination process that provide humanity and animals its’ food supply.

Studies showed that the degree of decline in the bee population is already quite alarming. Researchers, scientists and government officials world-wide are now concerned of their own country’s food supply.

Factors have been determined through extensive research, which attributed to the insect decline, were named as follows: use of pesticide, habitat loss and intensive agriculture, among others.

Work is being done today for a comprehensive action plan, which could help increase the bee population and other insect species. There are initiatives for a world-wide “pollination strategy” to help develop an action plan to save the black-gold pollinating insect population.

"We must develop a better understanding of the factors that can harm these insects and the changes that government, other organizations and individuals can make to help", said Lord de Mauley, in regards to the Bee Summit organized by Friends of the Earth.

Lord de Mauley, among others, is moving for the regulation of pest control chemicals and the prohibition of unnecessary use of chemicals in the environment. "I do not deny for a moment that it is important to regulate pesticides effectively and to avoid unnecessary pesticide use.” commented Lord de Mauley, in an interview.

"Changes in land use, the type of crops grown, alien species, climate change - these all have an impact. The relative importance of these factors and their interactions is not well understood.” said de Mauley.
Andy Atkins, the executive director of Friends of the Earth, is pleased with the response to the group’s bee initiative.

"We're delighted that enormous pressure for a Bee Action Plan from scientists, businesses and the public has stung the government into action.” said Atkins in a report.

"We all agree prompt measures are needed to tackle all the threats, to bees and other pollinators face, but an urgent and comprehensive route map and timetable are needed to ensure this happens.”, Andy Atkins added.

Hope the latest news on bees helped shed light to the question, “Are bees’ friends or foes?” All I can say is, we can never bee-too-sure, get it? Bees truly do play an important part in the balance of our ecosystem; the total extermination of the bee population will be detrimental to global food supply resulting to shortages and loss of plant life. No food results to hunger of, not only humans, animals which will eventually lead to starvation and an inevitable death toll on all species. No matter how smart, humans are in this day and age, we are dependent on insects, animals and plants for our own survival. Have you ever seen the “Bee" movie, see it and get the picture of how something so small, can indeed change the world

How to Find the Best Pest Control Company?

Pests are annoying and harmful. They could bring disease-causing germs to your homes. These small animals usually hide in your kitchen cabinets and sinks, or burrow themselves on the furniture cushions and mattresses. To keep your home pest free, you need to use the services of professionals. These people know the safest way to get rid of the vermin in your home.

Finding the best pest control company is not easy. Here are some ways to ensure that you get the best service.

First, conduct a research first. Discover the kind of pests that infest your home and the best and safest way to get rid of them. Sometimes, by making some changes in your landscape or cleaning your surroundings, you can get rid of the vermin. Studying how to deal with them will help you decide whether or not you need to hire the services of professionals.

Second, ask for the recommendation of some of your relatives, friends, or acquaintances. People who have experienced a company’s service would likely recommend it to others if it is good. The same is true with companies that provide pest control services. By asking around, you will be able to find the best company that could meet your needs. You will also be able to find one that will be the best solution to your problem based on your research.

Third, contact at least three companies. Compare the services that they offer, the price, the kind of treatments, and special privileges. If there are companies that use organic but effective treatments at almost the same price with the rest, the better. Environment-friendly treatments are safer for your health compared to conventional ones.
Fourth, after choosing a company, request for an ocular visit and ask for their solutions. Good companies would be able to describe clearly the procedures and the remedies that they will use. Ask intelligent questions to avoid problems in the future in case you decide to hire them.

Fifth, check the company background. If there are customer reviews, the better. Visiting the company website would be of great help.

Last, discuss contract with them. Ask for services covered by the price and what would require extra charges. Also, check if there is warranty. For example, if one-time treatment did not eliminate all the pests, you must have another treatment for free. This will reduce repeated expense on your part.

Of course, after finding the best solution to your pest problem, you must also do your part, especially procedures that the company recommends to ensure that you eliminate the pests in your home.

Spread of Deadly Disease. Beware! Part 3 "Lyme Disease"

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released an advisory on how to protect yourself and your family from tick bites. The CDC became famous in the movie, Contagion, showing its involvement in disease-plague prevention. The Flu-like symptoms are true. Ticks pass infected saliva into human skin with a bite. The parasites act quickly, invading and feeding on the body’s red cells, introducing disease into the host through an infected bite.

The elderly population, children and people with low immune system are more at risk. It is advisable to seek medical attention immediately, instead of dismissing it as a case of common flu. They say treatment can be effective if the disease is caught early on.

Lyme disease affects various parts of the body in different degrees as it advances. Bacteria enters the skin through the initial tick bite, infection is followed by the spread of a reddish rash associated with common flu-like symptoms. Overtime, the parasites work fast to hijack your system to later produce abnormalities in the joints, nervous system and the heart.
The part one of this article showed a short story I made about a small town that was unknowingly taken over by a strange disease they took for granted as the common flu, later causing pandemonium and rampant deaths which took the CDC officials by surprise. Fiction as it maybe, the symptoms I mentioned attributing to the disease itself is true.
Lyme disease is medically described to have 3 stages as: (1) early localized disease with skin inflammation; (2) early disseminated disease with heart and nervous system involvement, including palsies and meningitis; and (3) late disease featuring motor and sensory nerve damage and brain inflammation as well as arthritis.
Some tips given by the CDC included the following:
1. Spray yourself with DEET or permethrin tick repellent (on clothing and gear)
2.      Always wear pant before venturing in to the forest. Tuck you pants into your boots.
3.      Wear white or light colored clothing, it will be easier to see a tick and kill it right way.
4.      Before entering a wooded or grassy area use repellents containing 20 percent or more DEET.
5.      Nymphs are commonly found on the forest floor and can climb aboard via your feet.
Always use socks and shoes. Boots are recommended. Check them from time to time.
6.      Avoid tick infected areas like tick vegetation. They like tall grass, shrubs and leaf litter, these hitchhikers are just waiting to get a ride via your boot and snack on you.
7.      Perform daily tick checks after being outdoors, even when in your yard.
8.      Use a hand-held mirror or full length mirror to view all parts of your body. If you find a tick, remove it immediately using tweezers.
9.      Important areas to check: Your arms, in and around your ears, inside the belly button, back of the knees, all around your head and body hair, between the legs and around the waist.
10.  Toss your clothing in the dryer upon coming home from the woods. This will avoid the ticks from entering your house which can be carried via your clothing.
So next time you come down with the common flu, please do not dismiss it. Danger may be constantly around us. The common pests might surprise you as they bring not so common problems.
We do not need to wait the last minute to take extra precaution. Whether it is common pests, health condition, weather changes or spread of disease, one must not take for granted things and wait for the hammer to come crashing down.

Get rid of pests, keep yourself updated with the latest diseases, stay healthy, take care of our ecology, be aware of changes in your surroundings and consult a doctor. These tips will save your life. Time is precious. We do not have the luxury of time. Life is short, we must live it well.

Spread of Deadly Disease. Beware! Part 2

It is late fall, the hunting season has brought about great trade in the locality. A lot of people in this small North American town came down with flu-like symptoms and no one seemed to be alarmed. Despite the rampant health issues the people experienced, everyone was more distressed about the unexpected acorn crop problem, followed by the disturbing sudden increase in white-legged mouse population in the county. Pest companies worked overtime to eliminate the mice population unknowingly creating another greater issue they are yet to discover.

In few days, a family member comes down with a high fever, followed by the spread of an expanding reddish rash. The doctor said your loved one will be better, the muscle and joint pain, fatigue, fever; swollen lymph nodes are normal symptoms of the flu and will soon go away after some time, but no one got better.
A visiting scientist did some research and conducted interviews. The findings were both astounding and horrifying. No one in town knew yet but the town will have to be locked down. The CDC representatives were on their way, a phone call was just made. A few miles away was your house, you have not had any sleep for weeks. You decide to enter your room, your loved one looks like he is fast asleep with his mouth open. You wonder why you cannot hear the soft snoring you have grown used to over the past 25 years.
You lean over and try to close his mouth. To your horror, he is cold and rigid, you start to panic, and a 4-inch mutated tick comes out of his mouth. A cold loud shrill screaming in your heart, mind and spirit out no voice came out of you. It is too late. Frozen in place, the over-sized tick bit your hand and has made its way into your mouth unknowingly.
Sounds like a movie teaser from an upcoming horror movie, don’t you think? Well watching movies like the Bay, a 2012 American horror thriller film shot in the “found footage” technique showing an entire city was devastated by absolute pandemonium after an astounding level of toxicity was discovered in the water of Chesapeake Bay resulting to a plague that turned humans into hosts for deadly, mutant breed of parasites living in the dark waters.

Spread of Deadly Disease. Beware! Part 1

Imagine this. Looking out your bedroom window, admiring a picturesque forest, in it is an array of trees each showcasing different colored leaves. Some yellow, orange, red, purple, pink, brown and each showing a palette of beauty beyond your explanation. You feel so blessed to have what you have and you see yourself very fortunate to live in this part of the country. You feel the love, the joy and the abundance.
It is late fall, the hunting season has brought about great trade in the locality. This isolated small town, viewed by many tourists as an escape from the city, is buzzing with excitement and realization that the town will have a wonderful Christmas celebration this year due to the increased profit earned during the deer hunting season. Everyone is happy and it is perfect.
Then one day, all of a sudden one-by-one the men in your small town all come down with flu-like symptoms and no one seems to be alarmed. Adding to the health issues people were experiencing was a sudden increase in white-legged mouse population all over the county followed by the unexpected acorn crop problem. Pest companies worked overtime to eliminate the mice unknowingly creating another greater issue they are yet to discover.
In a weeks’ time, your loved one comes down with a high fever followed by the spread of an expanding reddish rash. The local hospital, far from its city counterpart, knowingly not as equipped to take tests as compared to the bigger medical facilities found far away, has dismissed it as the common flu. The doctor said your loved one will be better, the muscle and joint pain, fatigue, fever; swollen lymph nodes are normal symptoms of the flu and will soon go away after some time, but no one got better.
Soon one by one the men of your town die. Cause of death was declared as severe meningitis, some due to cardiac arrest. The ones still living start having difficulty with memory or thinking and complaints of odd sensations such as numbness. Everyone is horrified. The children and women start coming down with the same symptoms and succumb to death with the same cause of death.
A scientist from the CDC, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, along with his partner, a city reporter, who was visiting relatives in town became suspicions, there must be something here. Something big, something is very wrong. They start doing research and conduct interviews. The result of their findings was astounding and horrifying. They called the Director of the CDC and asked for the office to send help. The future of the country depended on it. The town will have to be locked down.
A few miles away was your house, you have not had any sleep for weeks. You were busy giving constant care to your loved one who came down with the flu a week ago. You decide to enter your room, your loved one looks like he is fast asleep with his mouth open. You wonder why you cannot hear the soft snoring you have grown used to over the past 25 years. You look closer, wanting to check if he is OK  You are astounded with what lies before you, the disease everyone thought was the common flu turned out to be something else.
Researching disease brought by common pests does this to a writer like me, also doing extensive scientific research on my articles for website publishing does provide me with numerous possibilities that might come up one day. Who knows? There is a lot of truth in what I have written, except for the 4-inch mutated tick.
Stay on this site and read more. See the next parts of this article to find out more about this deadly disease and what causes it. Know how to symptoms to keep your family safe.

Randomly Relinquishing the “Queen”!

We do not welcome termites to come into our house. One reason is that they possess a bad habit (wood-eating) and the second reason is there are too many of them (in colonies) when they come.  Feeding them is an outright big problem!  Humans do not entertain guests who do not behave properly inside our house, so to speak.  In this case, we speak of termites as unwanted ‘royal guests’ that need pest control.

The termites are ‘royal’ in a sense that they have’ a reigning queen. The mature termite queen (with a life span of 25 to 45 years) can produce 20,000 to 30,000 eggs a day.  Can you imagine their population in just a span of one year?  As the queen increases her size and cannot move freely, attendant workers provide assistance. The queen aside from being a ‘reproductive’ is also responsible for colony integration while the termite ‘king’ (unlike male ants that die after mating) can mate with the termite queen for life. If the queen dies, the winged also a reproductive caste, can replace the queen. Undertaking the labors of foraging, food storage, brood and nest maintenance are worker termites, the main caste in the colony for the digestion of cellulose in food found in infested wood while the Soldier caste, the elite class, is principally a defense against predation by ants. As a result of their wood-eating habits, the termites can severely damage unprotected buildings and other wooden structures inside the house, such as the cabinet, tables, wooden chairs and the like. Since “wood” is their main menu, they also go for other ‘side-dishes’ as  carpets, cloth, paper and other cellulosic materials.  Just imagine the ‘wastes’ incurred in welcoming termites into our very own properties as follows:

§  Money -  the large amount of money spent in building the house
§  Time    - the precious long period of time spent in erecting the house
§  Effort   -   the number of people engaged in the building work
§  Property  -  the damaged house, inside and out, and the yard

We should never underestimate the “teeth” of these ‘royal guests’ as they can ruin the whole house in no time once neglected by the homeowner. Likewise, we should never underestimate too, the pest control companies which offer effective methods in dealing with them because as experts in the trade, they are in the best position to eradicate unwanted guests in our whole property.  They survey the whole area first then stage a ‘coup’ to ‘overthrow’ the queen termite from her throne before the appropriate termite treatment is applied to all corners of the infested area.  Thus, knowing the termite treatment cost from them will enable you to provide the much needed protection for your property.  Act quickly to save the wooden structures in your house.   Houses should be treated with dignity because our abode provides our family the shelter we need so we have all the reasons to love, care, and protect it.

Cautiously Protecting Your Hard-Earned Sanctuary!

As the head of the family, (whether you are a couple; a single parent or still single but with plans of having your own family soon) your main concern is your ‘family’ including yourself.  You work hard day and night to provide for the basic needs of your household like the following:

ü  Food
ü  Clothing
ü  Shelter
ü  Education
ü  Gadgets
ü  Leisure

From the above list, most people prefer to invest on shelter.  Some reason out why: “Because this is the place where we will build our dreams and spend quality time with our family until we age.”  Actually, we don’t call it shelter or house; we call it “Home”.  It takes years of hard work just to build a dream house.  If someone is given the choice, instead of renting an apartment or acquiring a condo, he will choose to build his very own house that he can proudly say “it’s mine” (in the whole essence of the word).  Sacrifices are made in order to save large amount of money for the realization of the project. Plans on every design, from the roof to the floor; and even to the slightest details in and out of the house are considered carefully. But the need for protection is overlooked. How? Some are not cautious in protecting their hard-earned sanctuary! But, one may ask, is there a real need to secure and protect the house from dangerous household little pests’ such as:

Ø  Termites
Ø  Palmetto Bugs (different kinds of cockroaches)
Ø  Mice or Rats
Ø  Ants

All of these pests are very harmful.  Cockroaches, mice, rats and ants cause health-threatening diseases. But Termites is on top of the list!  In fact, $5 billion per year have been spent to the damages caused according to some records in America.  The hard-earned money used to build the family’s sanctuary will be in vain, if the homeowner do nothing to prevent it from being a ‘delicious target’ of pests.

During the planning stage of the house-building, considering how to protect and fortify it is also of utmost importance.  Inquiring about residential pest control services could be of great help.  These pest control companies can make a survey of your lot to find out if it is at high risk of termite attacks and other pests as well.  They can help in fortifying and securing your perimeter from the ground up to the ceiling.  This is the best pattern of securing your home from future attackers. Termites as smart travelers  can travel up to 350 feet away from the colony just to look for food and can comprehensively cover an area up to a half acre in size.  Thus, unconsciously risking the foundation and security of one’s hard-earned dream house is so unimaginable! Why not outsmart them? Seek information on the various treatments that can control future attacks of these harmful, destructive pests by planning ahead. By all means, cautiously protect your family and your hard-earned sanctuary!

Sleeping at Night Safe and Sound!

Home is a place where a loving couple builds their family and dreams.  After their lovely wedding, it’s now time to plan for their future.  Here is a list of plans:

  1. Are we going to have offspring as soon as possible or later?
  2.  How many offspring do we want to have?
  3.  What would be the best way to raise them up?
  4. What kind of education will we give our offspring?

But the most important question is:

5.   In what kind of house or surrounding will we raise them up?

Of course, loving parents would want to raise their children in a clean, safe house so it can also be called a loving home. They make sure that their house is the safest place to live in for themselves and their children. But through time, the safest place we thought could be the most dangerous place as well!  Why? It’s because houses usually have unseen “enemies” – Termites, ‘intruders’ not included in parents’ love, care and protection but ‘cohabit’ with them. But parents can do something about it.

Termites are no ordinary human enemies. They weaken the house as they ‘attack’ its very foundation through soil, wood, and other wooden fixtures inside our rooms. Once they have entered a house, their diet becomes unlimited! Everything looks ‘delicious’ as they gnaw wood, cellulosic materials like paper, clothes, carpets, shoes, particles from soft plastics, plasters, rubbers, sealants and silicone rubbers. Hence, termites can greatly damage man-made structures tremendously more than the damages done by hurricanes, fires and flood! So, to sleep soundly at night unharmed, we must find a solution to eradicate, and control these ‘enemies.’

A pest control service is of great value in taking action to eliminate these pests.   Pest control companies have effective ways and wide experiences in terminating household pests. Discuss the various types of termite treatments offered. Selecting the best and long-lasting treatment suited for your house will mean great advantage to your family.  As there are treatments that last up to several months only, great care in choosing is suggested. Feel free to discuss the termite treatment cost with the company’s representative.  The cost usually depends on the floor area of the house, the treatment required and the amount of work that needs to be done.  The reasonable cost can save your highly-treasured house, thus bringing the whole family some peace of mind while sleeping soundly at night!

While still on the warranty period, make further inspection from time to time on whether termites are building-up once again on your vicinity.  If new “intruders’ seem to appear once again, notify the company immediately.  Necessary action will be performed upon request.  The obligation to defend your house rests in your hands.  Make some researches about the facts on termites.  Make your home safe from the ‘eyes’ of those termites that look at your house as a sumptuous meal!  Protect your house! Protect your family! Eradicate those harmful pests!
